  • Towards a Regenerative Culture | Exit Map

Towards a Regenerative Culture, Together We Are Towards a Regenerative Culture, Together We Are, took place 29.02.2020, a couple of weeks before Covid changed everything. Our Exit Map artists who regularly come together via the Shared Practice, proposed new ways to meet movement and dance, adding a taste of political activism to further a social and environmental integration for our local community and dance hub. Performances, interventions, classes, talks, think tanks, clothes swap and games filled a whole day offering an entertaining yet thoughtful palette that brought people together by activating their minds and bodies to physically experience and share political, social and gender agendas. With left over food provided by local businesses and an audio station that shared interviews with locals we created a landscape that saw everyone involved, affirming the need to speak up and be heard while carefully carving the skills to welcome differences so as to meet togetherness like a blank canvas where a true picture of who we are and what we are living is only ever true when we allow all colours and shapes to paint it. Contributing artists: Laura Doehler Tania Soubry Anne-Gaelle Thiriot Jay Jule Lucy Thane Volunteers: Sebastian Ruiz Alexandra Baybutt Helena Webb Femke Baumann We connect and stand in life with our bodies as medium that hold infinite potentials. Movement and voice, the visual and the audio, the thinking and the sensing body. Awareness through witnessing and participation. We invite you to collectively design and shape the world around. We seek growth by taking an honest and critical stance and present the ideas we have and ask how others understand themselves as part of culture(s) we need to realise and claim. Performances Who is John Wick, work in progress by and with Laura Doehler supported by T. Soubry and A. Thiriot John Wick is a man who kills and gets killed over and over again. He exists as fiction alive in minds, readily obscuring reality. What is it to live in multiple realities, what are the hiding places and what is it we reveal of ourselves when we wear other people’s masks? This work describes a split identity wherein multiple personalities point at isolation and a search to find and make a connect to others. Brave (K)New Rave by and with Tania Soubry This work was in residency at Berlin Ufer Studios until 14.09.2020 A participative performance Let’s rave regenerative stories. How can we live together without beating each other up? How can we dance our way out of crisis? When did you last cry at the news? When did you last dance until sweat dripped down your face? Lie down if you want to, get up when you want. I invite you to listen, to reflect, to dance alone, with me, with us. Octopussies by Anne-Gaelle Thiriot and Jay Yule Performers: Anne-Gaelle Thiriot and Laura Doehler, duet This piece was born out of a desire to explore the female relationship to sexuality and penetration. Drawing on their own individual research, Anne-Gaelle’s physical practice around softness in relationship to tension and desire, meeting Jay’s research into female pleasure and the societal representation of the vulva. Octopussies has been drawing on various cultural approaches to this topic, human and animal. Aiming to evoke and question, they hope to encourage viewers to think about their own sexualities, environments and influences that mould or unmould them. Workshops + Engagements Story Dance by Lucy Thane A “StoryDance” workshop, inspiring people to find movement from a small story that compiles into a group dance linking each small movement and story together. It may become a procession if we wish, it may become what we want it to be. Contact Improvisation Facilitated by A. Thiriot and Laura Doehler Clothes Swap Facilitated by Venice, the whole community brings clothes and takes home new old pieces to enjoy. Reading and Moving Together A workshop by T. Soubry where texts meet embodied and social spaces, creating a new intimacy where words and body intertwine. Making the Green Green A thinktank how to get more plants and community events going to make the community centre more Green Round Table Passing the mic around we gather thoughts and opinions how we feel, act and make life work in Ladywell.

We will allow our attention to sharpen, shift and drift while engaging with the dynamic plurality of our bodies in relation to others. Imagination, imagery, and object work will be woven into the sessions as sparks for open exploration. Sara Ruddock (SWE/UK) The sessions with Sara invite listening through the body, as a relational and multi-sensory practice, playing with viscerality of voice, sound, rhythm and vibration, being with potentials and many moving parts. Tending to what might open if I listen through the in-betweens and edges of my perception, and how the way I listen might change my experience. You are invited to be with questions that the practice generates for you, as well as co-creating scores/loose frames for improvising together. Laura Doehler (DE/UK) Laura’s classes will enable us to openly and respectfully meet the perceptive field of territories and boundaries that we bring into the shared space through our bodies and histories. We will work with, pull and stretch our entanglements with these fluid, alien and intimate identities we own to viscerally explore collective sense making through gentle contact work, bodily listening and tuning practices for a new shared imagination to emerge. >>> Hub announcements Every Sunday - Exit Map: local SE London park to move and talk. We looked at architectures of togetherness and the movement within and amongst us through collective practices. With residencies, conversations and dances we realised that at heart authorship, ownership as well as a shared sense of responsibility have to be integrated and nurtured. 2024 for Exit Map means going forward by proactively involving and representing the people more who participate and share our ethos by highlighting our diverse approaches and solutions that articulate how movement impacts our way of life. Now our Shared Practice is stronger co-facilitated and our initiative Collective Movements , is a sharing of practices towards embodied connectivity for people to dance together and develop a personal voice in movement alongside a renewed sense of togetherness. Vasilikou and L. Doehler initiated a research called Architecture of Togetherness that stems from residencies at the arts and community space Ponderosa and works towards the development of their site and vision as well as other communities in London and abroad. The question we ask is how somatic practices shape a togetherness which would impact our views on identity and values and consequently informs the way we inhabit, interact and therefore build (or dismantle) our environment. We invited our Exit Map community to take part because these questions concern us all and many are interested to exchange and share the process of vision making towards a more socially, bodily aware and environmentally connected way of life. Our processes (dinners and meetups where we speak and move) brought forth this gorgeous and rich Zine you can view here. They also initiated more project proposals and the Dinner of Doing Things will mark the next step of this shared pathway. It is an opportunity to meet a small group of people (incl yourself) at their home where we can share what we need help with to build or fix our space or simply manage home life. We figured that this way we can co-author our home spaces and dismantle some of the walls that separate us while enjoying bodily conversations as we work together. It is an age old format that we pick up to commit to being present with one another and the spaces that extend away and back into us. If you are interested get in touch until 05.02.2023 outlining - which day/ hour of the week you can meet on a regular basis for about a month for a couple of hours each. - which area you live in. Based on that information we will create groups of up to four people that will meet once a week for a month. >>>Call Out With so much going on we figured we would like to employ someone to help us with our organisation once a week. A project by Laura Doehler and Carolina Vasilikou that has been evolving over the recent past at Ponderosa, Germany. We continue the research how dance and the collective inhabiting and building of spaces can create a progressive model of togetherness and we would love to hear from you if you would like to meet up to exchange about ideas. Why? Because the conception of what we imagine has to come from many not one or two. Digital Archive: Moving On - Siobhan Davies Archive "We wanted to make sure that we, the local SE London collective of humans, were OK because people all around us suffered from the effects of being socially distanced and from immobility by always being at home. Progressively various aspects naturally grew and opened our perceptions to how we make sense of nature, how language and collectivity lay the foundation for personal, professional and social development and how dance is being reassigned new meaning when we move with nature; the one outside of us and the one inside of us becoming increasingly inseparable. We found ourselves connected to the more-than-human and by engaging with it every week, like a ritual, it changed us, gave us strength and an outlook for a future where life and matter are more organically linked.” AND Becoming a member is easy and means you can attend all our events including Moving On on donation basis. • Collective Movements | Exit Map

Collective Movements photo by Patrick Beelaert, Freiburg Festival 2024 22.02. + 29.02. + 07.03. + 14.03. + 21.03. + 28.03.2024 Booking here for the whole series Booking here for single sessions An adult mixed level evening class that offers explorations of improvisation scores, instant composition and ensemble thinking. 3 multidisciplinary established dance artists share how our bodies can tune in to one another and relate in harmony as well as dissonance in movement. Their distinct approaches utilize techniques of touch, sensation, imagery, drawing, sounding and embodied listening to invite couriousity and receptivity towards the movement and energies we own and those that surround us. It is a journey into a sense making of the moving body and its pathway into interconnectivity. We invite all cultures, genders and abilities to join in to create a space of inclusivity to expand our collective story. We want people to encounter dances to foster a togetherness based on equality and openness that is respectful of our boundaries. The dance artists: Elisa Vassena Playfully moving between dancing and mark-making/drawing, Elisa's classes will invite us to cultivate curiosity towards different materialities in motion. We will allow our attention to sharpen, shift and drift while engaging with the dynamic plurality of our bodies in relation to others. Imagination, imagery, and object work will be woven into the sessions as sparks for open exploration. Laura Doehler Laura’s classes will enable us to openly and respectfully meet the perceptive field of territories and boundaries that we bring into the shared space through our bodies and histories. We will work with, pull and stretch our entanglements with these fluid, alien and intimate identities we own to viscerally explore collective sense making through gentle contact work, bodily listening and tuning practices for a new shared imagination to emerge. Sara Ruddock The sessions with Sara invite listening through the body, as a relational and multi-sensory practice, playing with viscerality of voice, sound, rhythm and vibration, being with potentials and many moving parts. Tending to what might open if I listen through the in-betweens and edges of my perception, and how the way I listen might change my experience. You are invited to be with questions that the practice generates for you, as well as co-creating scores/loose frames for improvising together. • Radical Inclusion | Exit Map

Radical Inclusion Visioning A curation to connect Ponderosa to its surroundings. Part 1 = Mapping place and needs. by Carolina Vasilikou and Laura Doehler at Ponderosa Tanzland in October 2021 Personal borders - collective thresholds - hard lines, soft cushions, warm smells, work and fun, awareness and inward investigations. What are the deeper-rooted meanings coming out from mappings of people with different root lengths in the place? To shed light on connections between land and people we invited those who live, stay and visit Ponderosa to draw maps individually, in conversation and during performances. Ponderosa is a place for living and creation. Residents and participants cultivate the becoming of a society via creative practices that foster acceptance and inclusion by exploring liminality. The longer one stays the stronger the embodiment of proposals. Innovative and regenerative approaches to rebuild society as functioning collective become the tools to shape one's home. It is a generous openness of shared ownership that makes Ponderosa a constantly evolving site-scape where sensibilities of space and people continue to evolve as people create with one another. The personal and collective ownership of place and actions resonates deeply and, like water seeping through the cracks, change our nature unconditionally. It trickles softly into body and land, self aware and probing. The direction of flow is outwards. Collective, fluid and permeable bodies empathetically engaged replace commonly drawn boundaries and affirm an openness that is no longer a vision but a physical state. Collaborative creative processes, the art of generous listening and unafraid responses, form a sparkly magic spell that weaves our central nervous system with rhizomes under and above ground. This coexistence is not about concessions but healing. It serves the wider community as people come and go, changed or ready to change. Yet, affirming this calling and reflecting on the worldwide need to nurture collective regeneration - how does what Ponderosa offers, sit beyond its own borders to allow people and land beyond its doors to thrive upon such connectivity? Roots reach. Workshop participants or event visitors from Berlin walk and swim to find entertaining leisure outside the creative arts hub hustle. When new to the land, they quickly return to seek comfort in Ponderosa's established home base and like minded otherness. Their drawings of Ponderosa are filled with special experiences and dances but reflect little of its surroundings. Those who stay, gradually spread their wings outside the Gut. Space to expand, natural habitat, privacy and a culture older than projects is attractive matter; with time the wider context becomes important and roots entangle with other even older roots. Those who stay and then stay a little longer look outside the Gut to settle. The sister project 'Betonnest', a village further down, in Stolpe is a landscape of concrete. We stand on stacked up concrete tubes overlooking the canal and woods, becoming witness to a time and place of crossroads. Impressive landscapes stand in stark contrast yet together. People of a new kind, dreamers with a backbone born from and shaped through a collective consciousness that Ponderosa has brought forth, now enter Stolpe. They are stepping into and onto German soil and history. They meet a culture not far from concrete; strong, dense, with a spirit of defiance and impenetrability. In Stolpe, roots of new depths may entwine. Fresh shoots meet old knarly roots with stories to tell. Where do our bodies end? What lies beyond perceived boundaries, boundaries that may ultimately connect us to a wider body? We grow from a place of belonging and with healing and wellbeing we can let it radiate outwards. We find new homes that emerge momentarily, casually or with investment and even risk. How can the trickle become a free flowing? Affirming existing relationships What if visitors and visiting practices took to disseminating the spirit and work via walks and talks outside of Ponderosa's borders? What if we shared new findings not by inviting in but making it available outside? On the camping site, next to the river or deep in the secret woods? There, on common land we can meet as equals, casually encountering together the enjoyment of nature as a home without walls and delineations. While nature may not offer the comfort and ease we associate with home, the challenges we experience such as walking through a swamp as the trail gets lost, prompts us to reflect on the inherent community we meet with every step as we discover tracks and listen to the sounds in the canopy or under the bark. It prompts us to reflect on the community we want to see meeting and coming together, dreaming of how a curation of nature and people may remind us how fundamental nature truly is and the power it holds. What if villagers could encounter events or talks in someone else's home? 'Outside' homes of those who work at Ponderosa or Taubenblau which is an extended residency and retreat space in Stolzenhagen as outside yet indoor places may foster a homeliness and trust that can lessen a threshold to enter. The familiarity of an event, like a birthday party for example can provide an effortless togetherness where exotic beings or unusual looks aren't questioned like they would be out on the road. Here they can become part of the family. Ponderosa's singing and cooking, fires and talks also stem from the desire to connect to roots, traditions or rituals that can be found in the countryside too. What would happen if we brought them together? The direction of flow is outwards as is the trust we nurture. It radiates three-dimensionally. Differences It matters to protect and affirm Ponderosa as a place of experimentation and avoid the downfall of becoming what many escape from by focussing solely on inviting the outside in. Yes, its doors are open but taking events and actions beyond Ponderosa's borders or simply encouraging an outward looking perspective may inspire those who are on the outside to unravel old fashioned protocols, reconsider values and definitions and eventually swim, against the main stream, into the Gut. Giving time for change to grow, let us not expect those who visit Ponderosa as haven of otherness to go out when they need support themselves. Yet to install a freedom to be as you are, out in the open, those who feel free to wander shall wander. To meet without expectations, become confident and skilled in meeting differences and the unknown may be an art we need to nurture if the larger society we live in cultivates safety and comfort behind closed doors so as to find courage to be different but together. Written by Laura Doehler Photographs by Ludger Storcks www.ludgerstorcks.com "The Living Map experience, in the autumn of 2021, revealed that at the centre of Ponderosa’s visioning is people-centred storytelling with future-framed lenses on. Ponderosa’s people, processes and spaces form an active, empathetic community of practice. Keeping in mind natural timelines, radical inclusion visioning orients the community of practice around narratives that build the stepping stones for new conversations starting, debates that become more meaningful and focused, guided shortterm decisions, personal practice development and bringing diverse participation in the making and regeneration of place." • Risk Assessment | Exit Map

Risk Assessment ...for Moving On events Moving On is a personal practice that people attend to while others in safe physical distance do so as well. This event is an effort to attend to the physical and mental health of SE London local communities, by facilitating a movement practice that is in line with current “lockdown” regulations. We, ExitMap, are committed to reduce the transmission of Covid-19 and the dramatic consequences on people’s lives and NHS capacity. Further, we are aware of the simultaneous mental health epidemic in London and the negative impact of the pandemic on social isolation and various kinds of physical and mental conditions. Our event has been carefully thought out in order to minimise physical proximity, while creating opportunities for people to experience social connection by sharing outdoors public spaces. Social distancing guidelines: Each individual is following the audio guidance and only interacts with others from a distance, by noticing their movements and responding to them. Participants might engage in a physically distanced conversation with one other person (at least 2m apart). In cases where there is more social density (more than two people), participants are asked to keep at least 4m distance, to avoid the impression of being a gathering. Their practice is synced to happen simultaneously with others, but in a different place than others. This person has signed a disclaimer to not, under any circumstance, come in close proximity (less than 2 meters) to someone else before, during or after the event, unless it is a person of their household or carer. Why people do it at the same time in relation to one another: The reason people undertake this exercise at the same time is to experience a sense of community, to feel supportive in their dance practice as dancing alone in public spaces is conventionally considered odd and out of place. As is going for a walk in a public space with Moving On we mitigate the negative effects social distancing has on mental and physical health. Therefore, this initiative responds to an essential social need in the most responsible way possible. How rules are communicated: Every participant has been made aware when registering for this event and has signed that they understand the rules of social distancing to safeguard everybody, that they understand to keep very generously spaced out to not appear as a gathering as it might upset people and that if they have been in touch with Covid in the past two weeks are not allowed to attend but are obliged by law to self isolate at home. Track and trace Alongside the registration we collect contact information to respond immediately should any participant show symptoms after the event. This event is however conceived for people to NOT be in any proximity that might endanger them or others. Location / Travel We encourage people to attend to their practice as local as possible by going to a park nearby and to make sure to not travel far from their home. We are putting an effort in letting people know who is in a manageable proximity to practice locally at the same time in roughly the same location. However we impress that this is not a meet up but remains, as always a personal practice that stands in relation to somebody else. Safeguarding Every participant signs along with their registration that they alone are responsible for their physical well being and for their belongings. There is no physical meet up or check in with a facilitator but an event where an audio proposes ways to engage with environment and movement which every participant can adopt to their needs and wishes as long as they make to stay physically distanced.

Shared Practice “In doing it, it gives me clarification.” Lauren Potter The Shared Practice is a non-profit dedicated space to explore personal curiosities in movement and dancing. The outcome is defined by the intension you bring which might rest in the desire to develop improvisation, technique or simply dance. We gain a deeper understanding of our embodied experiences by passing through stages of sense making, observing attention and engaging in conversations before and after. Open to all. Time: Fridays 11.15-13.15pm Place: Telegraph Hill Community Centre Fee: £8/ drop in - for bookings follow this link £7 if you sign up beginning of each term for the classes you want to attend - email info.exitmap@gmail.com until 07.04.2024 £40 if you are cash fluid, support the scheme and want to come whenever you like. Current term Spring 2024 26.04. 03.05. 10.05 . 17.05 24.05 31.05 What's next: Email info.exitmap@gmail.com (ref Shared Practice + name) when you want to join. A couple of ground rules: please come on time. It makes a difference starting together and having time to arrive. Ideally come 15 min early to settle in. there is a facilitator, Laura, to hold the space, guide the stages and answer open questions. at the start and the end we will come together to enter and exit collectively. it is a silent space where the sounds of breath and to some extend sounding are welcome but … sound can be very distracting and if you do use sound please keep in mind that others are right beside you sharing it and it will influence their work. At the same time being free to sound as you move also matters, so effectively we ask you to make wise choices and to speak your mind if something becomes too much for you to manage your own explorations. for the last 40 min we make use of music to benefit from the energy it gives us. Sometimes we have one musician with us who is taking care of music via live mixing but if not we take care of the music together via our own libraries like Spotify and we welcome people taking turn dj-ing. there are kitchen and toilet facilities, the studio is on the first floor floor and unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

  • V.I.P Talk | Exit Map

V.I.P. Talk Picking people out of the crowd – we admired them endlessly, demanded exclusive rights to dress them in our exclusive cabin that featured stars, make up artists, photographer and a granny which we awarded. It was a game of fake identity introduced from our side but most of our victims eased into their roles effortlessly that we were confused to who was playing whom. All of them left overly and absolutely happy after being on the receiving end of admiration and confirmation for at least 20min each. Many were students or emerging artists who tend to invest a lot for studies and work and receive little back – this intervention seemed to have healing properties besides bringing awareness towards how much we give and how much we receive in care, mutual love and respect and of course the outstanding icon and superstar, the 1% who gets it all. Collaborators : Bettina John, concept, performer and costume, Jaime Leme, concept, photography and performer, Maria Vargas, Make-up artist, performer, Laura Doehler, concept, performance photos: Jaime Leme Back to Archive

  • Laura Productions | Exit Map

Laura Doehler Current Productions / Research Mapping Communities The groundwork for the 'Architecture of Togetherness' is to understand how communities these days pursue the integration of 'being together' next to their everyday and often pressing needs to create models and structures for new environmental, social and political profiles. Having become increasingly attuned to how our practices can offer a kind of glue that can hold people and spaces flexibly and potentially unconditionally, the hope is to link our work with existing communities by understanding their current approaches and integrations of somatic practices and open a conversation on the urgency to have platforms where we can all meet no matter what background or mindset ... because we communicate through the body. This is a vision and research - by all means, we are not close to solutions yet. Who is John Wick? John Wick is a man who kills and gets killed over and over again and still he stands. He exists as fiction alive in minds, readily obscuring reality. What is it to live in multiple realities, what are the hiding places and what is it we reveal of ourselves when we wear other people’s masks? A true self flickers intermittently between images and personalities we borrow. An overriding numbness as we are submerged in stimuli that the more intense the input, the less responsive we are.
